Thread: How to use Proteus for PTSD?

  1. #1

Question How to use Proteus for PTSD?

I am a new user of the Proteus. I've been doing neurofeedback for a couple of years and my doctor recommended using the Proteus. I'm a 50 year old successful professional but still plagued by the recurrence of PTSD along with addiction urges which I'd like to quite down during stressful events and periods. The Reference Guide and User Manual on page 15 Proteus sessions do not provide much description of the sessions.

    1. Please recommend sessions which will help me to train my brain to be more relaxed during stressful periods.

    2. Please refer me to any source material so I can figure out which sessions to practice with.

    3. Also, do you recommend I use the Thoughstream with or without the Proteus for this purpose.

I hope this post is acceptable and appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Pilgrim Free

Andy: Thank you for your quick reply to my inquiry. Is there one particular session or sessions you'd recommend I use on a daily basis and if so at what time of day?

I think P19 would be good because it's mainly an Alpha program and you could use it at any time during the day.

Normally I would recommend alpha/theta programs but the theta part concerns me a bit with the PTSD. Alpha/SMR may be best for you. That is the 8-15 Hz range. Program 19 is mostly Alpha. Programs 38-42 are in the Alpha/SMR range. On the latter ones, some may find them more energizing than relaxing but it really depends on the person - so try it out.

The best thing you can do is to learn about how the different groups of frequencies affect the brain. I think Andy gave you some links ... if not, go to the library section of this forum as well as the reference section on the Mindplace Support site.

    3. Also, do you recommend I use the Thoughstream with or without the Proteus for this purpose.
I would say that if you were going to use the Thougtstream, you may want to use it independently of the Proteus. The biofeedback unit is a great tool to help your brain and body learn how to change states. The light and sound does the same but it's more passive where the biofeedback in more interactive.

As mentioned in the PM, but I'll repeat it here in case it helps someone else as well ... Richard Bandler has written a fantastic book called, "Get the Life You Want". The reason I like this book so much is that it is written so anyone can understand it and it has step by step instruction on how to make some significant changes in your behavior/neurology.

In addition, the amino acid Acetyl-L-Carnitine (along with Alpha Lipoic Acid) are great supplements to take if you are under stress. These supplements help counter the toxic effects of stress.

Dealing with stress and the side effects of stress (addictions, PTSD, OCD) are most successful when they are approached from a "wholistic" perspective. Wholistic meaning - involving multiple systems in the body (brainwaves, behavior, diet etc.). The AVS machines are a great tool but they are not a "cure all" and while they may be able to point your brainwaves in the desired direction, it is the other aspects of Mind Training that can keep you in that state longer. In other words, the AVS machine may give you a ride to the desired location but what you do once you get there determines on what happens next.

Mind Training, whether it be NLP, Buddhism, Shambalah Mind Training or Martial Arts Training is essential to success because these things give you more options on how to change your state and life. Proper nutrition and supplements (and if you are under stress, you need supplements) can help your body combat stress as well as help you maintain a biochemical balance (which is needed for mental stability).

Thank you for bringing this to the forum and giving us all an opportunity to share information about this most important subject.

It takes great strength of character to not only decide to make changes but to actually go through with the decision. It is a trait to be admired.
