How does the TS control the Proteus?

I understand that when linking the proteus and thoughtstream using the audio patch cord,(as described in the referenced docs) and an appropriate user session, the thoughtstream somehow interacts with the session.

I'm curious what that interaction is and how it is different from the session without the thoughstream connected.
